Loughor is situated on the Gower peninsula in the City and County of Swansea, South Wales. It lies in the north east of the Gower close to the border with Carmarthenshire. It takes its name from the River Loughor, which has its source in the Black Mountains and flows through Pontarddulais and Ammanford, before entering the sea near the town.
The Romans arrived in this part of Wales around AD 75 and founded what was known as Leucarum castle (Loughor castle) on the banks of the River Loughor to guard the communications route in South Wales. The Romans abandoned the castle completely early in the 4th century. Today all that can be seen at Loughor are the remains of a late thirteenth century square tower.
Close by, the road from Llanelli runs over the Loughor estuary with the parallel rail bridge alongside. The Loughor Boating Club organises river festivals and regattas including the Flounder Festival and Loughor Regatta.
