Wales
claims to host many of the top Mountain Bike Courses in the UK, and indeed
the world. But this is no idle boast as the USA based International Mountain
Biking Association recently declared that Wales’ mountain bike centres
"offer some of the best new trails in the world ....something for every
rider". The county of Gwynedd,
which encompasses a large part of the Snowdonia
National Park, contains several of these top trails and on this
page we include a Map showing
the location of six of the best Mountain Bike Courses. However although
the Map is useful in guiding you in the right direction to the best trails
it won't help in getting you round the courses.
With this in mind local mountain bike enthusiasts Paul Barbier, Sue Savege,
and Dafydd Davis, who know the trails in Snowdonia like the backs of their
hands, have put together a great collection of trails in a guide titled
"The Best Mountain Bike Trails in Snowdonia".
The guide provides full descriptions of 25 of the best mountain bike trails
in the area, and includes
colour photos, illustrations and accurate detailed maps of the routes. It
is divided into four sections covering: the Gwydyr
Forest trails, high above the Conwy Valley between Betws y Coed and
Llanrwst ; the Coed Y Brenin trails near to
Dolgellau in the south of Snowdonia ;the Llanberis
and Mount Snowdon trails; and, to the north, the Conwy
Mountain trails.
Each section begins with helpful information on the particular district
of North Wales, and then proceeds to class the routes as either Family;
Classic; Expert or Epic. It can be difficult to grade mountain bike routes,
but this guide aims to help you choose the ideal ride for your level of
expertise and fitness by offering technical grades for degrees of difficulty
from 1-5.
The mapping is based on the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000, but all the trails
have been completely redrawn to highlight the information that is most relevant
to mountain biking, whilst also supplying additional information to enable
the rider to get the best out of the individual trails.
