This map shows Llyn Brenig or Lake Brenig
in English. Brenig
is located high on the Denbigh moors in North Wales between the towns of Cerrigydrudion
to the south, Ruthin to the East and the town of Denbigh to the North. The
Alwen reservoir and a group of smaller lakes including Llyn Alwen, Llyn Aled
and Llyn Bran are close by. The hills of Moel Llyn (448m), Bryn Trillyn (496m),
Gorsedd Bran (518m) and Craig Bron Branog (501m) stand sentinel nearby on
the bleak Denbigh moors. Surprisingly, considering it's isolated position,
the area has had periods of occupation over several thousand years, with archaeological
evidence of settlements, cairns and ancient burial chambers dotted about the
moorland landscape of Llyn Brenig.
Today the signs of human habitation are the Visitor
Centre and Cafe, the Car Park and Children's Play Area. But they are not over
obtrusive in the landscape of Brenig.
The lake itself, or reservoir, is over 900 acres and is the largest in Wales
in terms of area covered. It has a perimeter of some 14 miles which makes
it ideal for the Mountain Bike Trails around the Lake. And whether you enjoy
mountain biking, fishing, watersports, or simply walking you will find plenty
to keep you and the family occupied at Llyn Brenig. There are restrictions
on the lake however which, although permitting sailing, windsurfing, rafting
and canoeing, do prevent the use of those noisy jet-skis and power boats.
