Welshpool High Street on Welshpool travel guide
Travel Guide for Wales and England >  High Streets in Wales and England >  Welshpool High Street
Welshpool has a long and colourful past and the town first appears in historical records in the 13th Century. This is reflected in the many features and buildings of historical value in both Welshpool High Street and Broad Street.

Many of the buildings are of special interest for the richness of their timberwork and represent fine examples of 16th, 17th and 18th Century timber framed buildings.

A few examples of historic houses include : No’s 9 - 11 High Street - timber framed buildings dating from the early 16th century; the Talbot Inn - another example of a 16th century timber framed building; the Mermaid Inn - timber framed and has been an Inn for at least 200 years.

Welshpool's role as the centre of an agricultural community, is reflected in the quality local produce on display in shops and the High Street promotes local crafts and items of a Welsh flavour. A unique blend of shops offers the shopper the opportunity to pick up items difficult to find elsewhere; from arts & crafts to fashion & leisure, fresh food & wine and lots more.
Weekly markets are recorded in Welshpool as far back as 1252 and 1282 and 13th/14th Century pottery has been found below the pavements in Broad Street. Indeed the markets were at one time proving so successful they were damaging the neighbouring Montgomery market to such an extent that in 1279 King Edward I, no less, removed Welshpool’s right to hold their market. Fortunately, the right was returned some three years later and the markets have flourished ever since.

Today the market is in the heart of the town held beneath the town hall clock tower. Formerly a street market it is now largely held indoors, with over 50 traders attending (the street market is now back on Mondays).

The impressive Town Hall and clock tower was built in 1837 and houses the markets on Saturdays and Mondays and a Farmers Market on the first Friday of each month.
