Dogs and the New Colwyn Bay Beach
The new beach at Colwyn Bay, between the Pier and Porth Eirias, is a fantastic asset for the town. In the summer months the beach was as crowded as it was in the 1950's and 60's and the young people (and some older ones) would gather on the sands until dark. Everybody enjoyed themselves and there was a great sense of community. The raised beach, level with the promenade, gave it a mediterranean feel, and the beach kiosks did a roaring trade. The oldies would be meeting up and enjoying cups of tea from the beach kiosks, and the kids would be having late barbecues.
The only fly in the ointment, so to speak, was that at the end of the summer dogs were allowed back on the beach. This would normally not be a problem - the twice daily tide would wash the beach. However now we have this new beach the tide no longer reaches to the top of the beach, and the mess left by any careless dog owners remains on the beach.
Once a month the tide might reach the sea wall, but this is not guaranteed and I believe the council must designate this section of the beach as dog free. The dog restrictions must apply all year round before a child is infected with a nasty disease.
