Saint Mary’s Church is in the Deanery of Tindaethwy & Menai in the village of Pentraeth on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. The church stands on the crossroads where the road from Beaumaris to Llangefni crosses the road from Amlwch to Menai Bridge.
It is thought that before the erection of the present church, there was a church on the site dedicated to Geraint, an early British saint and indeed this is evidenced by the old name of Pentraeth being Llanvair-Bettws-Geraint.
Although the present church was much restored in 1882 the lower courses of the north and south walls of the chancel and nave, and most of the west wall are probably mediaeval. The south chapel is possibly late 16th or early 17th century and may have been rebuilt. The barrel shaped font with a rough square base is set up in the porch as a stoup. Look closely at the pictures below [click to enlarge the pictures], particularly the west gable wall, and the joint between the older and the newer stonework is clearly visible.
