The tale of St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, is so entwined with heartbreak and tragedy that it has become one of Wales’s best known and well loved stories. | Dwynwen was one of the prettiest of Prince Brycheiniog’s daughters, Brycheiniog being the King of Wales during the 5th century. She fell in love with a man named Meilon Daffodrill and wished to marry him, but when Maelon rejected her love, Dwynwen was left heartbroken and fled to the woods in her upset. There she prayed to God to let her forget Maelon. In her dreams, Dwynwen received a potion from an angel and when she awoke and gave the potion to Maelon, he suddenly turned into a block of ice.
