Cosmeston Medieval Village is set in the year 1350, a troubled period in the history between the English and Welsh. The village grew out of a fortified manor constructed around the 12th Century by the Costentin family, who were among the first Norman invaders of Wales. When visiting Cosmeston you can experience medieval life by taking a tour of the village. A costumed guide will provide an enthralling view of peasant life in the 14th Century, or you can take a self-guided tour using our portable CD audio system. In years past the greatest fear was that famine would come. There were terrible storms that made the crops mouldy and the animals begin to die of the rot. Come Michaelmas there was often nothing to store in the barns and no seed for next year's planting. Soon the weak began to die. In recent years many a family has lost loved ones, and to see a mother cradling her starving babe would break your heart. Sometimes the Welsh who live in the hills rebel because they can not bear the burden of heavy taxes during the times of famine. The visitor centre is open every day and provides information about the park and medieval village. The centre incorporates a gift shop and cafeteria. There is always a Warden in the park to give advice and answer questions, you will recognise the Wardens by their distinctive uniforms. The Warden service offers a comprehensive educational package to visiting schools and groups. Other facilities
