Ynys Gorad Goch, or in Welsh 'the island of the red weirs' is an island situated between the Menai Suspension Bridge and Britannia Bridge in the Menai Strait. It's other name 'fish trap island' gives a better clue to the purpose of the walls around the island. The walls form weirs or gorads that trap fish on the eddying tide. Herring was a popular catch and these were smoked on the island. The fishing business has long since gone but the house is still lived in. Our Rhos-on-Sea page has pictures of the remains of other ancient gorads, or weirs, at Rhos Point.....
