Mawddach Estuary Barmouth Gwynedd Wales

The Barmouth to Dolgellau Cycle trail runs from the seaside resort of Barmouth to the market town of Dolgellau in Gwynedd West Wales. Known as the Mawddach Trail it is a traffic free cycle and walking trail that runs for 10 miles along the south bank of the Mawddach River. Access to the trail is easy, simply head toward the Railway Bridge that crosses the estuary of the Afon Mawddach. There is a small toll to pay to cross the bridge (one man + one bike in 2010 cost £1.00). Once the river is crossed bear left and keep the river to your left and you can’t go wrong. The trail runs along the track bed of a redundant railway line, which explains the lack of gradients on the route. The views are phenomenal with the added bonus of several nature reserves alongside the way. Should the full route (20 miles return) prove to be too daunting I would strongly recommend at least to persist as far as Penmaenpool (two third of the way) and the picturesque river crossing. Refreshments are available on the river bank at the Penmaenpool George Hotel. It is unnecessary to give detailed directions as the route is obvious and there are several information boards along side the trail. More information is available by clicking on the link below.
