Pontsticill Reservoir lies between the mountain of Pen y Fan to the North of Merthyr Tydfil. The lake is 2½ miles long and is part of a complex of 2 reservoirs, with Pontsticill the lower lake being the largest at 300 acres. Pentwyn Reservoir (known locally as Dolygaer Lake), the upper lake, covers about 40 acres. Pontsticill provides excellent sailing and windsurfing at Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club which is open to non-members by arrangement. The dinghy sailing club is based on the east bank of Pontsticill Reservoir. The lake is also popular with the Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association with many species of fish including, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Bream, Tench, Pike, Carp, and Wild Brown Trout. Walkers are well catered for with a variety of trails available in the area.
