The statue of Thomas Edward Ellis MP (1859-1899) is found in the High Street, Bala, Gwynedd, Wales. Thomas Edward Ellis was born at Cefnddwysarn near Bala and attended Bala Grammar School. He attended the University of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1875 to 1879, then went to New College, Oxford, graduating in history in 1884. Two years after graduation, he was elected to Westminster as Liberal MP for Merionethshire, rapidly becoming a renowned advocate of Welsh home rule. In a speech in Bala in 1890 T. E. Ellis, as he was known, called for a legislative assembly for Wales. He became the leader of the Cymru Fydd movement which sought to gain home rule for Wales.
