High Street Denbigh Denbighshire Wales
The statue of Henry Morten Stanley the famous African Explorer is to be found outside the library of the historic market town of Denbigh, Denbighshire, North Wales. HM Stanley was born in Denbigh and monies were raised by public subscription to erect a statue to the man who is renowned for the phrase "Dr Livingstone I presume?" Within a short time however a group of academics had organised a petition to protest against a statue to commemorate "one of the cruellest colonisers in history ..a man responsible for the deaths of 8 million". You can make your own mind up about the man, but I include a link to a letter from Mr Tim Jeal the author of the book : Stanley:The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer. Picture to follow shortly.
