Afan Forest Park is a major centre for walking and mountain biking in Neath Port Talbot, South Wales. The Afan Forest Park is quite simply a place of breath taking natural beauty, that has evolved into a mecca for outdoor activity. Wander through the secluded forest paths or spend an afternoon with the family cycling along the disused railway lines. | Mountain Bikers might prefer something more challenging and there are several world-class mountain bike trails, including the Penhydd Trail, the Wall, the Whites Level and the Skyline Mountain Bike Trail all adding to the sense of adventure in the Forest Park. | Bikers say that it’s the intensity of the downhill trails that make this place so ‘crazy’. Hikers claim its the demanding uphill climbs. However, both agree that Afan Forest Park is one of those locations where you can disconnect with life and reconnect with nature - and the benefits are muddy legs, aching feet and big smiles.| The advent of the Industrial Revolution led to the industrialisation of the Afan Valley and coalmines were dug to support the iron, tin and steel works of Port Talbot. Fortunately none of the environmental damage associated with mining remains and the valley has been returned to a heavily wooded and green landscape known locally as ‘little Switzerland’. | Indeed, today, the Afan Forest Park is a major centre for walking and mountain biking in South Wales. | Glyncorrwg Ponds Visitor Centre offers mountain biking, as well as fishing and canoeing and a mountain biking centre has been built in Glyncorrwg at the end of one of the cycle paths. | Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre is the main point of contact, however, and is the place to visit to find out about everything to see and do in Afan Forest Park. It’s the ideal place to start your day, and a number of the mountain bike and walking trails start from here.| The Centre has parking facilities, a café, showers and souvenir shop. Plus, the South Wales Miners Museum is situated next door. The friendly staff can provide information and guides concerning different trails and difficulty levels. | Bike Hire is available at Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre at Afan Valley Bike Shed. Situated underneath the cafe at the visitor centre, there's a wide range of high quality bikes - from kiddies trailerbikes to full suspension all mountain bikes.
