St Hilary Cowbridge Vale_of_Glamorgan Wales
Coed Hills Visitor Centre is situated in the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan, just 8 miles west of Cardiff. In an area packed with ancient history and breathtaking beaches, the farm is a family day out that could change the way you view the world. The whole site is run on alternative energy, from high-tech wind turbines and biomass underfloor heaters, to solar showers made out of scrap radiators. With its permaculture gardens, the place is an inspiration for the budding and more experienced eco-conscious. Residents and volunteers live in railway carriages, Mongolian Yurts, log cabins, tipis and straw bailed buildings. At the heart of Coed Hills lies the core community. A group of people embracing the new and old in order to lead a more sustainable existence, both ecologically and socially. We aim to inspire you to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to how you work and live. Visitors can take some aspect of our existence away with them and adapt it to their own lifestyle. The community is happy to engage with visitors, sharing their knowledge of, and enthusiasm for sustainable living. We have a green woodworking area and blacksmith, printing, mosaic, and textile workshops. It is not unusual to bump into artists, craftspeople or ecologists as you visit the main area. A programme of sustainable building is set to happen spring/summer 2008. Courses will be run on Low Impact Building and permaculture. There will be numerous opportunities to get directly involved in planning and creating a sustainable living environment. Guided tours are run for schools, colleges and groups. Come for just an hour or all of the day. Take a tour of the sustainable energy systems, or the woodlands and sawmill. Art workshops can be arranged. Try some mosaic making or create art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. We have built our very own stone circle based on the solar lunar calendar, ideal for picnics, Weddings, and other rituals. Check out the multiyurt and gallery which can be used for conferences, exhibitions, and celebrations.
