At 3,560ft (1085m) it is a true mountain and a place of legend - said to be the burial place of the giant ogre Rhita, vanquished by King Arthur. Some believe that Arthur?s knights still sleep beneath. Since 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has been making it easy to claim this mountain peak as one of your lifetime achievements. In a tremendously ambitious feat of engineering, and uniquely in Britain, a rack and pinion railway was built which rises to within 66ft of the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales. New For 2009 The new Snowdon Summit Visitor Centre, Hafod Eryri, will open during Spring 2009. Sympathetically designed to complement the landscape, this landmark building, grows out of the mountain and features spectacular panoramic windows giving travellers to Hafod Eryri unimpaired views across the mighty Snowdonia range and the Irish Sea, with newly accessible views to the summit cairn only feet above the building. Train Operation: Dates open: March 21st – End of October (Daily Weather Permitting). Opening Times: 8:15 am to Mid/Late Afternoon (Dependent on demand).
