Autumn of 2011 is swiftly turning to winter and as the leaves carpet the floor of the Gwydir Forest in North Wales so the snow will soon dust the hills of Snowdonia. Many will book a holiday cottage in North Wales specifically for the enjoyment of climbing or simply walking the snow covered mountains and valleys.
A short Christmas break and then the 2012 holiday season is almost upon us.
For many years visitors to Wales have had ever higher expectations for the quality of holiday cottages in North Wales, and 2012 will be no different.
Gone are the days when visitors to North Wales would jump on a charabanc (open top coaches to anybody under 45) and go gallivanting (travelling or gadding about in pursuit of pleasure) down the coast road to Rhyl, Colwyn Bay or Llandudno, whether for self catering or serviced accommodation. Long gone are the days of wartime nissan huts converted to 'hi de hi' style holiday camps, (the post war Butlins or Pontins camps in Pwllheli and Prestatyn) with basic accommodation in tin roofed apartments, or more correctly - tin sheds.
In 2011 - 2012 it is luxury log cabins, with hot tubs and swimming pools, 4 and 5 star holiday cottages on the riverbank among pretty cottage gardens with all en-suite bedrooms ...and fishing rights included if you're really fortunate.
Today visitors to Wales can find holiday cottage accommodation that has been thoroughly inspected and graded whether with stars or keys, either by the Wales Tourist Board or by Holiday Cottage Groups such as Cottages4You, Hoseasons or Sykes Cottages. Here at the www.walesdirectory we have been marketing holiday cottages online for a decade or more, and our top tip for a happy holiday in Wales is to check the grading of the cottage or apartment before booking the accommodation.
The inspectors really do a thorough job inspecting the properties, and the ratings reflect both the quality and the range of facilities. Cottage owners in North Wales in 2012 will have to stay on their toes either to improve their ratings or to keep their existing gradings.
As with television programmes such as the "hotel inspector", holiday cottage inspectors are continually travelling North Wales checking properties from the slopes of the Clwyd Hills in Flintshire, through the Vale of Clwyd, the Conwy Valley, the glorious coastlines of Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula and last but not least the hills and valleys of Snowdonia.
Some are forecasting a hard winter for 2011 - 2012, which can have its disadvantages of course, but many love the adventure of a trip to North Wales while the snow lies on the ground, whether in the valleys or on the mountain tops.
We have a cottage to let in Pont-y-pant, Dolwyddelan, and one weekend last year, after a family had left, I took a walk from Dolmurgoch - a thousand yards through the deep snow - up and over the hill to a secluded snow covered field above Bob Hendre’s farm. There among the sledge tracks and children’s footprints was a lonely snowman slowly melting in the winter sunshine, I could almost here the echoes of the children's laughter among the trees of the Gwydir Forest.
The guest book on the window cill in the cottage confirmed another family had enjoyed the winter wonderland of North Wales.
Come the spring the snow melts, warmth fills the valleys, the trees ...but that's another season.
