Construction of a new mountain bike trail will soon begin in woodland at
Penmachno close to Betws-y-Coed. The 32 km trail will cost £220,000
to build and should be finished in around 16 months. The trail construction
is being funded by a grant from the Forestry Commissions Cydcoed Project
and is one of the biggest projects undertaken by the organisation which
is funded jointly by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.
It is anticipated that the trail will employ 13 full-time jobs with the
promise of a further two once the trail is completed....more

This is very good news for mountain bikers and locals in an an area of low
employment but the project seems to confirm the march towards commercialisation
of the Forestry Commission in Wales. In the last few weeks they have also
submitted plans to erect hundreds of holiday cabins in the Gwydir Forest
above Betws y Coed to the consternation of local tourist operators. ( this
has been refused ..editor).I hope I am wrong but could they be promoting
Wind Farms in Snowdonia next ?? As I understand it they do not have to submit
to normal planning rules as they are deemed to be owned by the Crown.
