Yr Hen Ysgubor
Penrhyncoch, Aberystwyth. Ceredigion, Wales
This 100-year-old converted barn has been lovingly restored by the present owners and has retained as many original features as possible including stone walls and exposed beams. The property makes an ideal choice for those seeking to escape the rigours of everyday living and offers an excellent base from which to explore the mid and west Welsh countryside. Situated in a peaceful location up a quiet track overlooking the village of Penrhyncoch, the property is within walking distance of the local shop. The university town of Aberystwyth lies a mere 4 miles away and offers a good selection of shops, excellent restaurants and bars, and also has a shingle beach, small harbour, ruined castle and lovely promenade. The sandy beaches of Borth and Ynyslas are a short drive away, and a day trip to New Quay to watch the dolphins play and sample some of the locally caught fish is a must. For Georgian architecture, Aberaeron displays a wealth of graceful terraces around its central square, with a further row of colourful houses along the seafront - where there are also several attractions for children, including the Hive on the Quay (an exhibition of bees and honey-based products) and the Sea Aquarium. There is also the possibility of taking jet boat trips around the bay, or browsing round Clos Pengarreg - a collection of craft shops, with model village and mini railway. The nearby Devil's Bridge with its spectacular waterfalls provides the novelty of a steam train to the coast. Llyn Brianne has a very attractive landscape filled with mountains, forests and lakes. To the north is Machynlleth, home to modern art, with a cultural centre at Y Tabernacl, where temporary exhibitions are held, as well as films, theatre, comedy and concerts. In August, the Guyl Machynlleth festival takes place, which combines classical and folk music. The Spectrum Gallery in Machynlleth, and the Centre for Alternative Technology (2 miles further north) also make for good visits. Available nearby there is horseriding, fishing, golf and great walks up and around Nant Y Moch. Rheidol Valley also offers many scenic walking opportunities as well as an abundance of wildlife.
