There are six dolls in the Ladies of Wales, Merched Cymru, range. Standing 14" high, they feature individual head sculptures, reproduced in porcelain in Brenda's studio in the heart of Wales. Brenda also designs and makes all the costumes, whilst the replica accessories such as drop spinners and yokes are handmade for the individual doll by her husband, Roger. All dolls are numbered and a signed certificate of authenticity accompanies each creation.

Arwena the Brecon wool spinner

drop spinner

Since medieval times, the market town of Brecon has been at the heart of the Welsh woollen industry. The welsh doll Arwena is depicted with an authentic wooden replica of a ‘drop spinner’, a very useful device that had the advantage over the wheel of being portable, enabling a woman to turn her free moments into gainful employment, no matter where she was.
Arwena wears a woollen dress, a shawl draped across one shoulder and a striped neck-cloth. She has an apron, a black felt hat with squat crown, and frilled underbonnet. As with all the Welsh Dolls Arwena stands 14” high (including her hat) Arwena has an original hand made porcelain head, hands and half-legs. Her features are carefully china painted and she has life-like eyes and a soft brown mohair wig.
