Pen-y-bont-fawr is a village in the heart of the countryside in the Tanat valley, in the county of Powys, Mid Wales, with a population of around 250 people. Nearby towns and villages include Llangynog, Hirnant, Pen y garnedd and Llanrheadr-ym-mochnant.
Penybontfawr lies to the south of the Berwyn range of mountains and north east of Lake Vyrnwy. Many walks criss cross the landscape of the Tanat Valley and surrounding hillsides.
The village church is dedicated to St Thomas.
