Llandudno
Victorian Extravaganza 2
The Train Station and Bodafon Farm Fairgrounds
The Bodafon Farm Park sits just outside the town centre and holds a
fairground of its own over the May Day Bank Holiday, albeit with more
modern rides. These include dodgems, a ‘ghost ride’, big
wheel and small rollercoasters, as well as many prize stalls. The Bodafon
Farm Fairground is ideally located for those staying in the nearby caravan
sites, as it is just in the neighbouring fields.
The Train Station fairground is the less known site, situated in waste
ground just behind Llandudno train station. Again with modern rides rather
than traditional Victorian ones, it is popular with young people for
its exciting prize stalls, modern big wheel (although the views are not
nearly as good as those from Mostyn Street’s big wheel) and several ‘bungee’ rides.
This small fairground can be found by leaving Mostyn Street via Lloyd
Street, turning right into Madoc Street and continuing straight ahead
into Augusta Street, where you will find signs towards the fairground.
Other attractions and shows
There are plenty of craft stalls, mostly run by local and national charities.
There are of art workshops for children who may find the rides a little
daunting, and adults can also help.
Each year there are several entertainers who decide to dress up in Victorian
costumes and parade the length of Mostyn Street. The real parade is held
every day of the Extravaganza at 12 noon, starting from the Llandudno
train station on Augusta Street and exhibiting the many traditional Victorian
costumes—with most entertainers on stilts!
The town of Llandudno
Llandudno provides the perfect place to hold the Victorian Extravaganza.
Purpose built in 1850 as a seaside resort for rich Europeans, it has
since become a busy and popular coastal town in North Wales, retaining
its Victorian architecture whilst introducing more modern ways of transport
and shops. With the opening of Parc Llandudno in October 2007, there
are plenty of places to enjoy some retail therapy if you are staying
in Llandudno and fancy a short time away from the Extravaganza.
The town has celebrated its Victorian elements since 1986 when the first
Victorian Extravaganza was held on Mostyn Street. Since then the Extravaganza
has enticed thousands of visitors each year, who arrive each year wondering
what awaits them in the town centre and return the following year for
the traditional steam engines, motor cars, roundabouts and hobby horses…and
not forgetting more goldfish.
