This map shows Pontsticill Reservoir located on the Southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Mid-Wales. It lies between the mountain of Pen y Fan (886m) to the North and the town of Merthyr Tydfil approximately 5 miles to the South. The lake is 2½ miles long and is part of a complex of 2 reservoirs, with Pontsticill the lower lake being the largest at 300 acres and with depths varying to over 100 feet. Pentwyn Reservoir (known locally as Dolygaer Lake), the upper lake, covers about 40 acres with an average depth of 18 feet.

Pontsticill provides excellent sailing and windsurfing at Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club which is open to non-members by arrangement.  The dinghy sailing club is based on the east bank of Pontsticill Reservoir.

The lake is also popular with the Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association with many species of fish including, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Bream, Tench, Pike, Carp, and Wild Brown Trout.

Walkers are well catered for with a variety of trails available in the area. More details here > But if you prefer to take it easy then the Brecon Mountain Railway runs alongside Pontsticill Reservoir.

Brecon Mountain Railway :

Travel in an all-weather observation coach behind a vintage steam locomotive through beautiful scenery into the Brecon Beacons National Park along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Dol-y-Gaer on one of the most popular railways in Wales. At Pontsticill you can alight from the train and visit the Cafe, admire the view across the water to the peaks of the Brecon Beacons, and go for a ramble alongside the reservoir. There is a play area for children.

Fishing :

Coarse fishing - Open all year round (except Pike).
Pike fishing - 16th June - 14th March
Trout Fishing - 20th March - 17th October

Roach, Rudd, Perch, Bream, Tench, Pike, Carp, Wild Brown Trout.
During May large numbers of fish migrate into the shallower Dolygaer to spawn and tend to remain there until the onset of winter. Due to the altitude of the waters winters can be fairly unpredictable and consequently April to October tend to be the most productive times of year.

Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club :

A friendly dinghy sailing club with one of the most beautiful settings in the whole of the UK, based on the large Pontsticill Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons National Park. With this location even non-sailing members of your family can enjoy a lovely day out, with a gentle stroll around the reservoir, or up into the hills, simply enjoying the views.
A diverse club, sailing everything from boards to 20ft cats with members of all ages and with a wide range of abilities. All are welcome.

The emphasis within this club is on fun. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Many training days are organised throughout each year to assist improvers and beginners.

Directions :

Head towards Merthyr Tydfil on the A465 (Heads of the Valleys Road) Look out for, and follow, the brown tourist signs indicating the way to the Brecon Mountain Railway. Follow these signs but instead of turning into its car park continue straight on.
