Gower 2 :

On arriving at Oxwich Bay via the narrow lanes of the Gower we parked the car almost on the beach itself. And what a beach ! Oxwich Bay offers huge sand dunes and wide expanses of golden sands that stretch Nicholaston Burrows Oxwich Bay Gower Peninsulafor miles. Walk approximately two miles and you arrive at what is probably the most photographed of the beaches in Wales ... Three Cliffs Bay.

The setting of Three Cliffs Bay would tempt all but the most aqua phobic amongst us into entering the water. Indeed although it was mid October I was regretting the fact that I had not packed a towel for our day trip to the Gower.  (However I have since read that it is unsafe to swim at high tide at the Three Cliffs Bay end of the beach as there are strong rip currents, so I may have been fortunate to have forgotten my towel).

But swimming or not there is plenty to keep you occupied on Three Cliffs / Oxwich Bay. I've not seen so many interesting shells on a British beach before, having found large hermit shells, plenty of cockles, and, surprisingly, quite a few live scollops. The same scollops that sell in the local fish mongers for around a pound each.

Horse riding on Oxwich Bay BeachAt the height of the season and at weekends the Oxwich Bay end of the beach may be too overcrowded for some as it is popular with bathers, wind surfers and there are many high speed boats and jet skis. I am afraid that there are still many boat owners who do not seem to realise just how dangerous their crafts can be to the ordinary swimmer, so please be careful on busy days. Alternatively you could walk to Nicholaston Burrows, a mile or so East on the way to Three Cliffs Bay, which is much quieter than the Oxwich Bay end of the beach at the height of the season.

By the time I had made my way back to the car from Three Cliffs Bay it had started to cloud over and as it was 4.30.p.m. by then we decided to return to our hotel in Swansea. But we could not complain as we had enjoyed a great day out on the Gower and will definitely be making a return visit. Any cottage owners on the Gower who want to swap a week's holiday in a cottage in Snowdonia for a week in their cottage on the Gower ? (Telephone 01492 530423 and ask for Bernard)
